I think the par-5s are a big key this week. The majority of [Tiger’s] scoring was done on the par-5s. There are four really good opportunities to make birdies out there and then there’s a couple of tough holes on the back nine. If you can just make par there you’re going to do well. I don’t think it’s going to be an option to hit iron off every tee box. I think you’re going to have to be slightly aggressive off the tee and take some things on.

Muirfield Gets the Thumbs Up from McDowell

Former US Open Champion Graeme McDowell completes his Open set when he tees up in this week’s Championship at Muirfield and he rates the East Lothians links as one of the best he has ever played.

“It’s a great course here, and it completes my set of Open golf courses,” he told the assembled media just a couple of weeks after winning his third title of the season at the Alstom French Open at Paris National. “Muirfield was the only one in the rotation I had never played before, and I got the chance to come here early last week and play it in beautiful conditions. And, as everyone has seen, it’s in fantastic condition.

“It’s a fantastic golf course,” he added. “It’s right up there for me. I’d probably say Birkdale, Turnberry, Lytham and this one, in no particular order, that’s my four favourite Open courses.

“It’s strength is that it doesn’t have a lot of weaknesses. It doesn’t feel long, but, let’s be honest, when a links course is playing this firm and fast, it doesn’t have to be long. It’s well-bunkered, and I think they have done a great job with the rough this week. It’s nicely graded. It’s thick in the areas it should be thick, but it gives you half a chance to get club on ball in areas where you deserve a chance.

“It’s got really nice balance. I think it’s very fair. I think bad shots get punished and good golf gets rewarded. I like it a lot.”

The 33 year-old from Portrush, Northern Ireland, ended a 40-year wait for a European winner when he won the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach. He believes his chances of claiming a second Major title are boosted by this week’s draw which sees him paired for the first two rounds with Tiger Woods and Louis Oosthuizen.

“I have played enough golf with Tiger to know what to expect on Thursday and Friday,” he said. “He’s always a great guy to play with, very complimentary. He’s the best player in the world and maybe the best player ever, so he’s the sort of guy you want to play with, especially on a week like this.

“I think this (course) will appeal to the tactical side of his game. I think back to Hoylake in 2006 and it was maybe as firm and fast as this one. He certainly dismantled the course that week so we’ll be watching with interest his game plan Thursday and Friday. He’s the kind of guy if you can finish one shot ahead of this week you might not be that far away.

“Louis is one of my very good friends,” McDowell added. “I tweeted earlier this week that the swings of Tiger and Louis are probably two of my favourite swings in the world. So it’s never bad to play beside two guys with the rhythm and golf swings they have.

“I’ll be very excited about that pairing, and the obvious natural intensity that brings, and I’ll be using that to my advantage.” 

Mickelson Drops his Driver but Enthuses about his Putter

This week Phil Mickelson will tee it up at The Open Championship without a driver in his bag.

For the second Major in succession, the 43 year-old American has elected to swap his driver for a fifth wedge and he has little doubt it will prove to be a sound tactic on a course where accuracy is much more important than distance from the tee.

“I feel like the 64 degree wedge can save me a lot of shots on this firm ground,” he said. “I just don’t see how a driver is going to help me in many areas. I’m able to hit my 3-wood almost as far (as a driver) on this firm ground and distance on any tee shot is not even in my mind.”

“It’s all about avoiding bunkers, avoiding rough, getting the ball in the fairway and I can do it a lot easier with clubs other than a driver.

Mickelson arrives at Muirfield fresh from victory at least week’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and convinced that he has overcome the putting problems that have plagued previous visits to The Open.

“I think the common thread over the years is that I haven’t putted very well on these fescue greens but I’m really optimistic this week because I’m start to putt as well as I have ever done.

“I putted well last week and more than that I’ve been putting well for months. I really feel like I’ve keyed into something but I don’t really want to discuss it. I don’t really want to share.

“You’ve seen me try the belly putter, you’ve seen me try different grips, but finally I believe I have found the secret to my own putting and what I need to do to putt well.

Last week was a very positive sign for me because I putted well on difficult fescue grasses and in the wind on Sunday. That’s given me problems here in the past but hopefully I have it solved.”

The American believes the last piece in the jigsaw is the luck needed at a Championship where the weather conditions can change dramatically over the course of a single day.

“We all saw what happened to Tiger here in ’02. It was one of the worst breaks imaginable because he had won the first two Majors and had a shot at the Grand Slam, but that’s part of the tournament here.

I missed the weather here in ’02 because I played so poorly the first two rounds I teed off early Saturday but I did get in at St George’s. I thought that weather was the worst I had played in a long time although I played the absolute best nine holes I’ve ever played.

“You just need a bit of luck with the weather and you need to stay out of the rough.

“The key to the rough is staying out of it,” he added with a laugh.

Snedeker Hopes 32 will be the Lucky Number Again

Brandt Snedeker will be hoping that his number comes up when he tees up in the 142^nd Open Championship at Muirfield.

Adam Scott was 32 when he won this year’s Masters at Augusta National, Justin Rose was also 32 when he claimed his first Major at last month’s US Open at Merion and it just so happens the likeable American is the same age as he arrives to play in his fifth Open Championship.

“I’ve been told about that a few times and I love it,” admitted the American. “It’s a good precedent but the hardest part is making sure to keep it going. But I’ll take any quirky thing and use it in my favour.”

The 32-year old from Nashville, Tennessee, missed the cut on his first three visits to the Open but showed last year that he has learned how to cope with links conditions by finishing third behind Ernie Els and Adam Scott at RThe most coveted trophy in the game and one of the most iconic in all of sport: Learn about the origin and history of the Golf Champion Trophy, more commonly referred to as the Claret Jug.oyal Lytham & St Annes.

“I think I have finally learned that you need to be patient when you’re playing links golf. You need to know that sometimes you’re going to hit a quality shot and not be rewarded and you need to know that sometimes the ball is going to bounce 50 yards off line.

“I’m sorry, that’s just the way it is. It’s just so different to what we are used to but it’s also great fun. You’re going to hit what looks like horrible golf shots that really aren’t that bad, but you’ve got to be patient enough to know everybody is going to do it. It’s not the end of the world. But that’s really tough to accept because you feel like every shot is so important in the Majors.

Snedeker is making his first visit to Muirfield but he has taken an instant liking to it.

“The golf course is fantastic,” he said. “It’s unlike any British I have played in before, because the ball is bouncing everywhere. It’s really firm and fast but the course is in fantastic shape. The greens are some of the best I’ve seen. It’s going to be a lot of fun.

The American has strong opinions on what makes Muirfield so special. “It’s very straightforward,” he argues. “It’s right in front of you. You know when you hit a good shot, you get rewarded. If you hit a bad shot, you’re going to pay the penalty. I’m not saying that’s not true with most British golf, but this one seems more so like that. There’s not bunkers in the middle of the fairway. There’s very defined areas where you need to hit it. It’s a great mix of holes. I chart what I hit in practice and I’ve hit every club in the bag every day. It’s just a really cool mix of holes.”

A Relaxed Tiger Woods Sets Out in Search of his 15th Major Title

Tiger Woods was in a relaxed mood as he talked to the massed ranks of the media ahead of the start of the 142nd Open Championship at Muirfield.

The three-time Open champion seemed more at ease than at any time since he burst on the scene by winning his first of 14 Major titles at the 1997 Masters tournament and adamant the elbow injury that had troubled him at last month’s US Open was a thing of the past.

The World No. 1 has not won a Major since his play-off victory against Rocco Mediate at the 2008 US Open but that long drought seems to have done nothing to diminish his confidence.

“I feel very good about my game,” a smiling Woods told his inquisitors in the media centre. “I’ve had a pretty good year so far; won four times. Even though I haven’t won a Major Championship in five years I’ve been there in a bunch of them where I’ve had chances.

“I just need to keep putting myself there and eventually I’ll get some.”

Woods puts his barren run down to bad luck rather than a serious problem with his game. “I think it’s just a shot here and there,” he said. It’s about making a key up-and-down here or getting a good bounce there. For instance, this year at Augusta was one of those examples. I played really well but a good shot (on the 15^th) ended up getting a bad break. It’s a shot here and a shot there. It’s not much. It could happen on the first day, it could happen on the last day. It’s about turning that tide and getting momentum. It’s about capitalizing on opportunities. That’s what you have to do to win Majors.”

Woods recorded his worst round as a professional when he ballooned to an 81 in the gale force wind and driving rain that swept over Muirfield during the third round in 2002 but that episode has done nothing to diminish the American’s respect for the course.

“It’s one of the best venues. I mean you have to hit the ball well here. You have to be able to shape your shots. It’s no coincidence that so many Hall of Famers have won here. It’s a bit like Merion in that respect. You have to be a good ball striker. You have to be able to shape it both ways and really control your shots. It’s not like St Andrews or Troon where it’s straight out and straight back. You’re playing almost in a kind of circle. You’ve got so many different angles and so many different winds. You have to be able to manoeuvre it both ways.”

The weather forecast suggests that playing conditions will become increasingly hard and fast as the week progresses and that is exactly how it was when Woods won over a parched Hoylake course in 2006. On that occasion the American used just one wood all week and it would be no surprise if he was to employ a similar tactic here in East Lothian.

“I’ve used a lot of irons in practice,” he admitted. “The course has a bit of speed to it. This golf course is playing similar to that (Hoylake). It’s quick. On some of the holes a 4-iron has been going 280 yards. It could change but at the moment it’s fast and it’s going to be all about controlling the run as best as you possibly can.

“That’s the neat thing about links golf,” he added. “I love this Championship. I just think it’s neat to play this type of golf. There are only certain places in the world where we can. Here and probably the Aussie sandbelt courses are the only places where we can play true links golf.

“I fell in love with it 17 years ago when I first came over here. My introduction to links golf was Carnoustie at the Scottish Open and St Andrews on back-to-back weeks and that’s about as good as it gets.

“It’s neat. I just absolutely love it,” he added before heading back to the practice ground to complete his final preparations.

Bob Harig, ESPN.com senior golf writer: Ernie Els. The defending Open champion also won at Muirfield the last time the Open was played here. He loves links golf, loves the course and has won in the past month, a good combination.
Gene Wojciechowski, ESPN.com senior national columnist: Graeme McDowell. His game fits a course where the wind blows hard. And he's already won three times this season.
Ian O'Connor, ESPNNewYork.com columnist: Ernie Els. The defending champ won at Muirfield in 2002, and walks into the Open feeling good about his game despite the missed cut last week. "Your memory serves you well," Els said about his victory here 11 years ago, before adding, "I've missed it in places that I know I can get it up and down." It would be a big surprise if Els isn't in the mix Sunday.
Farrell Evans, ESPN.com senior golf writer: Nick Faldo. The three-time Open champion, who will turn 56 Thursday, is now a full-time golf analyst for CBS and Golf Channel, but he still cherishes Muirfield after winning the Open here twice, in 1987 and 1992. At the '87 Open, Faldo won with 18 consecutive pars in his final round.

Highlights of each day's play also will air in The Open Championship Today from 3-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday on ESPN and Saturday and Sunday on ABC.
